In the movie, one of the main character is a colorful, playful and forgetful Blue Tang named Dory. Since the release of the movie that it seems every kid wants their own saltwater aquarium in their own Dory and Nemo and each set of parents will face decisions of whether to let them have it. The film had a huge impact on the aquarium hobby for the first time in the eyes of the general public has seen fish to have a personal.

So what is Dory and her other friends Tang really want?

A Tang is an oval shape fish flat when viewed from the front. Tangs has a single small spine on each side of their caudal peduncle (just before their tail) that can be extended if necessary for self-defense. Tang which have one or more larger spines which can not retreat in the same position, it belongs family surgeon. When the fighting fish, they quickly slap their tails to their opponent trying to slash them on their back.

Tangs or Surgeonfish name is a generic name given to many of the closely related fish species. basically it is accepted that all species Zebrasoma should be called Tang and all kinds of animals with spines 2 should call Surgeonfish, while all other single species seem spined called or surgeon depends Tang on who you talk eg Blue Tang / Blue Surgeonfish.

Tangs in an aquarium is generally a very greedy fish, receiving different types food ranging from flakes, pellets and seaweed from brine shrimp and more. The fish are often found grazing on the rock so that one of their main benefits are controlling algae in an aquarium. As they feed off algae from the rocks they can graze on almost all day, so most species need not be fed daily but some active species such as lipstick surgeon who did not graze as much, the need to be fed more often. Because these fish are active so it is important to ensure they do not miss out under the conditions for feeding which is common in many reef aquariums.

Tangs can be quite aggressive, mainly their own kind or similar shaped fish. While they were in territory, it is important to try to add any Tangs in your aquarium on the same day if possible. In This way they have an equal chance of establishing territory. If you have to add a Tang in a tank established in Tangs, then it is a good idea to rearrange the stones to obfuscate the established fish. It is also safer to add more then one Tang at a time to divert the attention of any be aggressors. fish are often poorly if kept in pairs as one who regularly dominate the other one they are best kept singularly or in groups. When Tang was introduced to one another it is usually take about three days for them to sort out their dominance hierarchy before they get along. Yet the size, shape and color difference between the faster it will likely be. There is always a risk when adding a Tang in an aquarium with other Tangs as they can prove conflicts and may even kill each other.

Tangs are very prone to white spot disease with their skin and not scales. It is a good idea to quarantine fish with medications such as copper or formalin sulpate for a period of approximately 2-3 weeks before they are introduced to a display tank to reduce the chase them of spreading disease to other fish in your tank.

It is highly recommended only to introduce Tangs in a tank with a level of salinity as low as 1.018. Eases the low osmotic stress and reduce the risk of white spot infection. If you have a display aquarium, it is harmless to corals to drop salinity over a period of about a week and slowly raise it again next week when the fish are introduced safely. The corals can not open up as well as the salt level is low but will return to their former glory once salinity slowly return.

Any time the fish the white spots contract, drop the salinity and make sure you feed foods high in garlic. Most good aquarium shops stock diet high in garlic such as New Life Spectrum flakes or Garlic Guard Seachem's solution can be added to other foods to reduce the susceptibility of a fish is on parasitic infections such as white spots.

Head and lateral line erosion is another common conditions Tangs, which tends to be a problem with keeping fish for many years with a low vitamin diet. Fish affected by this condition will have what appears to be little craters on its head or along its lateral line. Raising the quality and variety food offered and specifically target the amount of vitamin A in the diet can reverse this condition see. It is important to do a comprehensive review of water quality and to monitor what the fish are fed in over time to see the shape or color of the fish deteriorate. Just because a fish is feeding well in the short term is not means that it is getting what it needs to withstand. You should always monitor the condition of the fish over time and note that no replacement for foods that are high quality.

Tangs can be very fast in an aquarium so it is important to allow enough room and plenty of hiding area as the age range from 15-40cm. Tangs will spend a lot of their day searching among the rocks and is very energetically dart around the aquarium and more that in and out of the stone. A good cap rock is essential to the fish to ensure they have a dark place they can escape to to feel safe when they are stressed. Having a safe dark place would allow a fish to be stressed in quiet more quickly thereby helping to keep the immune system and prevent them from developing disease.

Some of the most popular Tangs are the Blue Tang, Powder Blue Tang, Sailfin Tang, Yellow Tang, Purple Tang, Brown Scopas Tang, Achilles Tang, Kole Tang, Lipstick Tang shoulder surgeon and Orange.

Paracanthurus hepatus Blue Tang is also known as a regal Tang and is a common salt water fish found in coral reefs often in large schools feeding on algae or zooplankton. The Blue Tang is without doubt the most popular species of Tang, the bold boisterously active colors and features making it a temptation for every hobbyist. fish that is very widely available, and is found in many reefs in the world, most common Australian. It was greedy, fast growing and it can get to about 30cm long.

fish is good to know this option arrangements to sleep as it is often interject some of the most market and looking uncomfortable position when it retreats for the night, often at the same time each day regardless of whether light is on or off. Another behavior common to fish it a habit of lying under the tank like it's dead. It is often pointed out to me by children while I was working in an aquarium retail store. Children are often saying "Excuse me sir, the fish there are dead" and sure enough when second time it was just a Blue Tang practice is unique resting habits. With a little tap on the glass, the children are happy to see the fish jump up hope to get a feed.

Careful consideration must be given before adding this fish get white spots very easily and thus quarantining high recommended. Blue Tang should only be introduced into a tank with a low level of salt.

Once fish has been paid to the tank can be A very tough, long life fish that will take you and your family years of enjoyment.

The Powder Blue Tang Acanthurus leucosternon a fish rarely recommended as it is similar to the Blue Tang but its success rate in the aquarium is an even less. In many aspects, it's like to remain a Blue Tang but is more susceptible white spots and death is very easy, partly because it is not located in Australia and are therefore imported, meaning that it is probably quite anxious at the time this matter reaches an aquarium shop. Important that you only buy fish from a store that you trust and only deals on the net caught fish as fish from the Indo-Pacific where catching fish with cyanide is common.

A big warning to everyone wanting to get this fish once settled it can be very aggressive. Although it did not grow as fast as a Blue Tang may reach up to 25cm.

The Achilles Tang Acanthurus achillies is one of the most sought and then asked about the Tangs. Many people request it enthusiastically fish until they know how difficult it is to get, how costly it is and how difficult it is to keep. In many aspects such as size and survival rates this fish is quite similar to the Powder Blue Tang just bigger, more aggressive and even more difficult to maintain.

The rarity coupled with its low survival rates and high prices means it is recommended only if a high quality and over sized UV sterilizer can run on any fish tank housing this display. The money saved not having to replace the fish after several attempts to keep it can pay for even the best of UV units, which will benefit residents throughout your tank's.

The Sailfin Tang Zebrasoma veliferum is a true Tang and an excellent choice as an aquarium fish that has great color, are easy to maintain and not too expensive because it is easily available in Australia.

This fish can reach 40cm in length so it should be allowed enough room to grow. Like all fish their growth is stunted if kept in a small tank.

This fish is very similar to the more expensive and rarer Red Sea Sailfin Tang Zebrasoma desjardinii which is also a great fish to keep in an aquarium. The version of the Red Sea is darker stronger pattern but not as common or as well when the first introduced.

It is rare to see a reef aquarium without a Yellow Tang Zebrasoma flavescens, it is because it is such a wonderful aquarium fish loves that eat algae. The predominant yellow color is unmistakable, with its boisterous, gluttonous personality is a must for every reef aquarium. You can identify Yellow Tang as "Bubbles" in the movie Finding Nemo, and its inclusion as a character have also seen the popularity of this increase in overall Tang public. It is common among children in an aquarium shop situated in front of a tank containing a Yellow Tang calling out to their parents "look, look Its Bubbles ".

Yellow Tangs usually comes from Hawaii and can grow to 18 cm in length but normally much slower than other species of Tang. The color of the fish can be quite patchy at night but it was bright yellow during the day.

This fish tends to be very easy to maintain and I often find this is my first choice when recommending a Tang for any aquarium.

The Brown Tang Zebrasoma Scopas scopas is rarely and love is very good to keep as it is very hard and has all the same behavior of Yellow Tang but a little more shy. This fish is generally available in Australia but not commonly sold because as the name suggests, it is not bold colors, so it is not a prized fish in the hobby. This fish is very good for beginners and lovely blue marking if you look up too close to the fish.

The Purple Tang Zebrasoma xanthurus from the Red Sea is very similar Yellow Tang but more expensive, rare and aggressive. Most aquarium stores are lucky to get the fish several times a year and the stock sells very quickly as They are easy to maintain and a real novelty to many patients aquarist.

If you want to keep a Yellow Tang with Purple Tang it is worth ensuring that the Yellow Tang is higher than the number of Purple Purple is likely to be more aggressive. Although fish are generally kept together It does not always work as they were aggressive in any other fish that is a similar shape to them. Housing more then one fish per tank is not recommended.

This fish is highly susceptible to head and lateral line erosion, so it is essential that it offers a high quality of food varied from the beginning. Although they are mostly safe keeping reef tanks, fish that is likely to be rougher sa corals than most Tangs. They are usually only occupied a few large polyp species.

Not quite as rare is the subtle but beautiful Ctenochaetus strigosus Kole Tang also called the Yellow Eyed hair teeth. fish have been found around the world, growing 15cm in length and rarely appreciated even by beginners, is very popular among intermediate hobbyist who is willing to pay a bit more for a lovely fish. This fish is a good addition to most tanks it rarely causes any problems, eating lots of hair algae, can get along most fish and it's not too hard to keep.

This fish is an excellent catch at any time that is available. You rarely hear a bad word about it from anyone.

A large male lipstick Naso lituratus surgeon can get to 50cm and has a long parallel whips at the top and bottom his tail making it a very striking sight. fish reef is very safe and the best take on a large aquarium, they even beautiful as a couple that they are rarely aggressive. This fish is often difficult to put in the long term because even when the fish appears to be feeding, it can still die of hunger over time. This is a large, active fish that often consumes low-nutrient foods for nutrition is the biggest concern for this fish. When the fish is stressed they tend to swim erratically and not feed. Drain it of energy is a very common cause of death in this species. Products as Stresscoat containing Aloe vera do tend to have a calming effect on the types of fish high stress. Any fish to swim erratically instead of hiding if they are stressed is always at a disadvantage in an aquarium. To keep the fish for an extended period of time must ensure that they are receiving enough high quality of food, and feeding at least twice a day. There is a slightly more expensive version from Hawaii Blonde with a yellow stripe on top of fish in the area of the normal black one.

I rarely recommend this fish, although it is a very good selling fish due to its charm. I suggest that you make Is the fish are feeding before you buy it.

Finally, the Orange Shoulder Tang Acanthurus olivaceus is a very large, common, easy to keep, Tang hassle free from Australia and perfect for any aquarium. When the fish is small it exhibits a beautiful orange color but it's growing requirements more of a dull greenish color to an orange shoulder. Despite the fading of their colors, fish are still selling quite well because they are normally reasonable price when sold in Australia

There are many fish in the Tang and surgeon whose family is worth considering in addition you fuel. Size, stamina, aggression, rarity and price are all factors that must be taken into account in your decision making.
