Chain Law!

Winter often means snow-covered and icy roads. Experienced truckers know that the lighter load, the less traction the tires have. But even Trucks hauling heavy loads may lose traction on snow and ice. That's why many states have put the chain law in effect. Chain law requires by truckers to put chains on their tires wheels to get more traction. Normally, when the chain is required for Trucks, cars are also required to use chains or snow tires.

Chain law is publicized by the state road signs and road conditions, website portal, road conditions hotlines and the like. You basically only see the law go to chain effects on mountain passes, but the state can require chains on any roadway encounters dangerous journey winter conditions.

Some states require that truckers carry the minimum required by the chain in the winter months, though they are not planning to chain up. Many states may allow cables instead of chains, but most require truckers to bring chains. Cables are generally frowned upon for being less effective.

California Chain-up Requirements

California does not require truckers to carry chains during certain times of the year. However, when Trucks enter a post "chains required" area, they should be carrying chains. And when the chain law is valid, truckers can not proceed without chains on their wheels. Cal-Trans has set up a "truck screening" area when chains are required to ensure that truckers are carrying the minimum required chains, so that if they need to use chains, they were able to install them.

In general, California requires 5-axis Trucks to have chains on all tires on the main drive axle, two wheels on the other axis drive, and a rubber band on each side of the trailer-any hub.

California has three Chain Condition implement them.

R-1 Chain Law:
Chains are required on all vehicles except passenger vehicles and light-duty Trucks under 6000 pounds gross weight and equipped with snow tires at least two drive wheels. Chains must be carried by vehicles using snow tires. All vehicles towing trailers must have chains on a drive axle. Trailer with brakes must have chains on at least one axis.

R-2 Chain Law:
Chains are required on all vehicles except four-wheel-drive vehicle under 6500 pounds gross weight and equipped with snow tires on all four wheels. Chain for a range of drive wheels must be carried by four-wheel drive vehicle with snow tires.

R-3 Chain Law:
Chains are required on all vehicles without exception.

Colorado Chain Law

Colorado Chain-up Requirements

Chain law applies to commercial aircraft, if truck with gross weight rating of 10,001 pounds and the combined vehicle weight rating (truck and trailer) is £ 26,001, if the truck has a weight rating of 26,001 pounds, or if The vehicle is designed to carry 16 or more passengers (including driver).

Chain is required for all commercial vehicles.

Chain Idaho Law

Idaho does not require truckers to carry chains during the winter months. However chain may be required to continue to travel during the winter season.

Montana Chain Law

Montana Road Conditions: 511 or 406-444-6339 or 800-226-7623

Montana does not require truckers to carry chains during the winter months. However, if you choose to travel without putting chains on your tires in a post "chain area and you get in an accident, you have a huge penalty to pay. Montana requires that all wheels of a drive axle is chained when the chain law is in effect.

Oregon Chain Law

Oregon Chain-up Requirements

During the winter season, Trucks are required to bring the minimum value chain they need to do. Oregon does not require that chain is carried between specific date, but the chain is required to be in the truck during winter weather conditions.

Oregon uses road signs to inform drivers of the chain-up requirements ahead. If the sign says "Snow Zone, Carry Chains or Traction Tires," the minimum required chains for your truck must be carried in the truck. Utah Chain Laws

Utah requires vehicles that are likely encounter conditions requiring chains to bring up enough for a chain drive hub.

Washington State Chain Law

Washington Chain-up Requirements

All vehicles over £ 10,000 are required to carry minimum chain from November 1 to April 1 each year on the following routes:
I 82 between Ellensburg Exit 3 (MP 3.00) and Selah Exit 26 (MP 26.00)
I 90 between North Bend (MP 32) and Ellensburg (MP 101)

Wyoming occasionally shut down the freeway except for the all wheel drive vehicles and vehicles equipped the chains or snow tires.
