Minimizing the X10 On The Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 Mini

This is a fairly common approach to product for mobile phone makers to release or mini lite version successful high-end products that extend the mystique they have developed a broader segment of the market, it does not matter if the feature set is less than impressive.

In the recently concluded Mobile World Congress 2010, Sony Ericsson unveiled a pair of Mini smartphones will hope to ride the euphoria and hope baited his X10 upcoming XPERIA announced in November last year.

One of them is the Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 Mini, as the name clearly implies, is a reduced version of X10.

At a glance, the Mini was remarkably small for a touchscreen smartphone with a small measuring 83 x 50 x 16 mm and a lightweight weight 88 g arguably makes it probably the lightest smartphone on the market.

Light in the pocket, it should also be light in the wallet as a closer reading reveals his watch is a lightweight on features as well.

While it may be disappointing when compared to the X10, the Mini lives up to being just a Mini, and in itself, is competitive enough for Android and non-Android smartphones in its class.

  • It is not running on the same 1 GHz processor Snapdragon of X10 but you get the Qualcomm MSM7227 processor clocked at 600 MHz. We had hoped that it is using more recent Android 2.0/2.1 Eclair that other Android phones are now using, but you still get an obsolete Android OS 1.6 to Rachel UX user interface.

You also get a satnav functionality built-in A-GPS receiver gets Google Maps support.
  • A reduced body means a smaller display and here you get a mere 2.5-inch TFT with QVGA resolution and 16 million colors. In size, you still get a capacitive touchscreen that should be a delight for children with little fingers. It comes with accelerometer auto rotate for viewing and an anti-scratch glass cover.
  • The imaging comes with a 5 megapixel autofocus snapper LED Flash, Face / smile detection and geo tagging. There is also a video recording QVGA video light and a cinema grade 30fps frame rate. Entertainment options include the usual audio and video player, a stereo FM with RDS and a 3.5mm headphone jack on top of its wireless A2DP stereo headphone support.
  • 128 MB is the most with you for its internal memory but you get microSD expandability up to 16 GB. The lithium polymer battery delivers a talk time of up to 4 hours and a standby time of up to 285 hours.

The Availability

The Mini is expected to ship in the 2nd quarter, probably in April with the family and much delayed XPERIA X10 now on the website of Vodafone UK. It comes in six body colors - lime, red, pink, silver, pearl white and the more pedestrian black. As expected, no price data at this time. But if the feature set indicates, it can not be priced more than half of what the XPERIA X10 will cost.
