Is it all just a Game? - A Fight Against Boredom

One of the first things we ever learn to do is play. Like all animals, people seem born with a thirst for challenge, an urge to compete. As our world becomes increasingly divorced from nature, the need is perhaps even greater than ever for activities that sharpen themselves, prepare themselves, and stir the adrenaline.

Probably the first game is in training for hunting and for war, often deadly serious contests for position in the tribe. Developing skills in the absence of real risk is part of what makes our species so successful in maintaining low rates of mortality. It can be seen in the modern entertainment practices, from the grid in the X-Box, the tribal vital to success in every level of culture.

It does not seem to matter which opponent is, though for some reason the overwhelming preference is to face a difficult one. Perhaps the play more interesting, perhaps the greater pleasure. An easy enemy defeated confers no glory. And even when success is more than one computer, the game itself, Honor is empty if too easily won.

The urge to success is the essence of human motivation. Hardly any activity is free with it. The same biology of reward for finding food makes us rosy apparent winning prizes or electronic badges.

It was the end matter. In the world today, it may be almost impossible to feel like life has any meaning. Most people something they do not care about someone for they do not, all day long, for three or four decades before permanently consigned to the balcony for the lemonade-sipping.

The rest of the season, it seems many of us would rather do too so much as ... win a game of our choice, which we can install as much of our time as we choose. The type of game we pick says volumes about our personality. Some choose good one-on-one sports such as racquetball, while another class is reaching all the way sports teams arthritis.

In the virtual world, gamers will be the beneficiary of some of the most prolific technological innovations fire consecutive recent explosion of pixels. Because first arcade game appeared in the seventies late, the drive for more realistic virtual contests are backed by some of the deepest corporate pockets on Earth. The designers, of course, game-addicted genius to find the perfect building mousetrap is a greater challenge than playing other people's pastime.

The end result of this is increasingly a larger class of folks more or less literally living in a game. Advanced RPG's like the Sims and Second Life offers a virtual world complete with drama, characters, and the latest hot realistic detail, the mundane chores of everyday life. We come full circle. As robotized industry becoming more and more human labor obsolete, we can finally find ourselves a nation of unemployed workers while away the day playing a virtual factory for points.
